Season 1, Episode 20.
It’s incredible to think that we are 20 episodes into the Retail Crime Uncovered podcast, and wow, what a journey! In this special season finale, Emmeline revisits the best of the interviews and maps out the key learnings from industry experts, police and, of course, offenders themselves. From ORC to tagging, self-service to guarding, this episode is jam packed with the latest thought leadership and innovative practice. If there is one place to go for a roundup of LP / AP news and developments over the last 12 months, you’ve got it right here!
Season 1, Episode 19.
In this episode of Retail Crime Uncovered, Emmeline catches up with John Yates QPM, Director of Security for Scentre Group (owner of Westfield), Australia and New Zealand. In a former career spanning 30 years John held one of the top spots in the Metropolitan Police, the largest police force in Europe. He is the recipient of many awards, including the Queen’s Police Medal for his role in coordinating the UK police response to the 2004 Indian Ocean Earthquake. Most recently he has been involved in the response to another devastating incident. On 13th April a man armed with a knife entered Westfield Bondi Junction in Sydney, Australia and fatally stabbed six people and injured several others. Emmeline and John talk about how a community and business have joined together to reflect and rebuild following such a tragic incident and what it means more broadly for security in Australia and New Zealand.
Season 1, Episode 18.
In this episode of Retail Crime Uncovered, Emmeline catches up with Nottinghamshire police inspector, Ollie Vale, about Operation Motivation. The policing operation focuses on education, intelligence gathering and taking enforcement against licensed premises that are found to be buying stolen goods. Ollie talks about how the operation came about and offers advice for other forces looking to implement similar strategies and initiatives (you might also get a few tips on how police officers keep their toddlers in check!).
Season 1, Episode 17.
In this jam-packed with insights episode, Emmeline talks to one of the industry’s leading global experts about how he’s managed to implement a theft prevention eco-system across more than 2,800 stores. You can hear more about Kroger’s Extreme Stores Program and the Elite Guard Program – a must listen for anyone working in AP/LP!
Season 1, Episode 16.
In this episode of Retail Crime Uncovered, Emmeline talks to the hugely knowledgeable and experienced Detective Chief Superintendent Jim Taylor about the business and policing partnership dubbed ‘Operation Pegasus’. As a key part of the UK government’s approach to tackling serious organised retail crime, Jim explains the importance of sharing data and intelligence to target the most serious and networked offenders. This is compelling listening for any country or location looking to establish similar policing units and strategies to tackle high-harm retail crime.
Season 1, Episode 15.
In this episode Emmeline speaks to Sekura Global about the trends in crime they are seeing internationally and how their bespoke solutions are driving positive results. Emmeline caught up with Roxanne Christenson, Director of Accounts for the North America region and Laeticia Bourcier, Senior Account Manager, France. These two different markets highlight the need for understanding the local context and expression of criminal activity as well as risk mitigation solutions that recognise cultural differences.
Season 1, Episode 14.
How do we know which sources of crime data are reliable and credible – and does it matter if they attract the desired attention to crime across the sector?
In this episode Emmeline outlines the ‘dark figure of crime’ and draws upon some examples of industry surveys that have been conducted to fill the gap between police recorded crime figures and actual rates of crime. The episode ends with 6 key takeaways on how to use, interpret, and advance the data pool that the industry relies on.
Season 1, Episode 13.
Her company uses a mix of methods to identify repeat offenders and build evidence. As a former shoplifter in her teenage years, she brings real world experience on tackling retail crime. Season 1, Episode 12.
Emmeline is in conversation with Paul Gerrard, Campaigns and Public Affairs Director for the Co-op Group, about the pioneering campaign work under the Safer Colleagues, Safer Communities initiative – this is how you drive meaningful change! It is the UK’s fifth biggest food retailer with more than 2,500 local, convenience and medium-sized stores.
Season 1, Episode 11.
In this episode Emmeline explores the notion that theft has been decriminalised in the UK. The official figures do not make for a palatable listen. Emmeline outlines why now is the time to act to turn the tide on the shoplifting epidemic. To understand the importance of early intervention in what might be considered ‘petty theft’ as someone starts their offending career, she talks to a former prolific offender about her experiences from having a full-time job at a top hairdressing salon to a life of crime and addiction.
Episode 1, Episode 10.
In this episode of Retail Crime Uncovered Emmeline catches up with Stewart Farrell, Head of Retail Loss Prevention at Next, to check in on how the busy run up to Christmas went in terms of sales and losses. Stewart talks about some of the innovations and solutions at Next that are helping them to better track product and protect from theft and fraud. As one of the contributors to Operation Pegasus we hear about the importance of collaboration across the industry, and importantly, what’s behind the door at 10 Downing Street!
Season 1, Episode 9.
In this week’s episode Emmeline talks to Trahern Pollard who is the Founder and CEO of We Push for Peace. The nonprofit organisation provides Community Outreach guards in place of traditional security, to not only create jobs, but more importantly, to change the way people think about community engagement, relationships, and opportunity. Trahern’s hard work and innovation has seen his organisation partner with major household names such as Whole Foods in several US cities including Chicago, Detroit and New York. It’s also taken him to the White House on multiple occasions. If there is someone who understands the importance of people when it comes to safety and security, it’s Trahern.
